REACH : "Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals"
REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. It is a European regulation on chemicals that came into force in 2007. The aims of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the hazards of handling chemicals knowledge of the intrinsic properties (hazards) of chemicals and of the risks linked with their use, both for human health and for the environment.
From 1st June 2008 all chemicals currently used within the European Union must be preregistered then registered with ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency.
TOTAL Lubrifiants is concerned by REACH at two levels:
- As a chemical manufacturer (and also as a chemical importer), i.e. base oils, soaps in the greases, etc.
- As a chemical downstream user through ensuring that our suppliers' are in compliance with REACH regulation.
All companies manufacturing and/or importing chemicals (in quantities over 1 ton per year) must have preregistered their chemicals with the European Chemicals Agency in 2008 then draft and submit registration files with this same agency at the latest by December 1st 2010, June 1st 2013 or June 1st 2018 depending on the quantities manufactured and on the hazard level of the substances produced.
