Low SAPS lubricants

Global warming, and to a broader extent fight against pollution, has led to an automotive industry revolution.

Carbon dioxide or exhaust gaz decreases are becoming first priority challenges. TOTAL Lubricants has been supporting this ecological trend from its very beginning and made numerous investments in Research and Development.

Today the new generation of Low SAPS lubricants, compatible with post-treatment systems, is brought to market.

Why will we have to use new lubricants (Low-SAPS)?

An unprecedented Research and Development era focusing on depoluting systems has been governing the automotive field during last years.

Dedicated to Diesel motorisations, Particulate Filters were introduced. They trapp the accumulation of particulates identified by a sensor and produce a diesel injection which finally burn of the indesirable components.

New challenges to meet for lubricants ! They need to adapt to the new physical and chemical conditions of post-treatment systems. A true technological break : post-treatement systems are indeed little compatible with the components which were traditionally entering into the formulation of lubricants ..

Technological break but based on an existing know-how

The brand new generation of engine lubricants for passenger cars substitutes the undesirable components thanks to an innovating formulation : lubricants of low sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulphur, called Low SAPS.

With 50 % of new components, these products of high technology are the result of developments underwent to answer both to ACEA standards and to adapt formulations to technological options taken by the car makers.

ELF Solaris and TOTAL Ineo ranges now set up the broader market Low SAPS lubricants range.  

A reduction in the conventional constituents in the oil and improving their quality and therefore the lifespan of engines and the post-treatment systems, is what the TOTAL LUBRICANTS team has succeeded in achieving.

We are working since several years on these new products, but only happened to know a little more than one year ago about the acurate car markers requirements. Constraints are continuously evolving given the researches car makers themselves lead on the subjet. Today, further to many engine trials, homologation programs carried out and successfully achieved, trial stages based on real scale on vehicules fleets allow to confirm our products sturdiness.
